Movable Type Upgrade

I just finished with the upgrade from 2.64 to 3.121 and I have to say that while the blog looks cool the UI that I use to enter the blog entries sucks! I will have to check to see if there is a better application to enter my information.

I also need to get a handle on these comments. I seem to be getting an enormous amount of comment spam. Hopefully this new version addresses this or maybe gives me some parameters to manage it.

Who needs CSS?

I do!

At work, I just took back full responsibility for the corporate website. I had created the original website many years ago using nothing but basic HTML and notepad as my editor. I have dabbled in FrontPage, in fact that is what this site is created with and obviously use Movable Type for my blog.

I decided to import the website into FrontPage so that I can maintain it. It just so happened that the event that caused this to occur also caused us to change the layout of the complete site.

Well, long story short... I ended up making mass changed to each page to incorporate the new look and feel. If that wasn't bad enough, I have been reading the blogs of others who are very pro CSS and have even began to learn the syntax and methodologies.

Nothing worse then doing something the wrong way and knowing it is wrong before you do it.

Why did I do it? Well. as usual time is of the essence and to do it wrong ate up about 10 hours of my time. Doing it right would use many more hours. Yes, I will eventually do it right, so the 10 hours will be truly wasted. But the conversion deadline was met and I will be able to convert the site at my leisure and no one will be the wiser.

USB Key

I finally broke down and purchased a USB key. I selected the Memorex Travel Drive. It stores just over 2 GB. I pulled it out of the case, pressed it into my USB port and up came the removable drive in Windows XP. Sweet!

Why so large? Well, in my work I deal with several databases and data files that can easily exceed 1 GB in size. In order to keep the most current versions on the key I needed a large drive. Even zipped these files are around 100 MB.

Later I will try the USB key with the Powerbook.

Franklin Covey PlanPlus Software

Now I've done it. In my quest to achieve a higher personal productivity quotient, I have started to use the Franklin Covey Outlook add-in.

The product, FranklinCovey PlanPlus for Microsoft Outlook, leverages the thinking of the creators of the Franklin Planner and Steven Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". I am using it with Microsoft Outlook 2003. It adds an additional toolbar, a new Outlook Today page, and greatly expands the capabilities of the tasks and journal functions within Outlook. This product allows me to set goals, prioritize my tasks, and keep track of multiple step projects all within Outlook.

Many moons ago I went through Steven Covey's week long class on "Seven Habits". I agree with the concept and used it for quite some time but have fallen of the wagon, so to speak. I am hoping to renew my relationship with these concepts and begin to implement them in a way to improve my personal and professional productivity.

I'll keep you posted...
