Adding NAS

I know that I am a little late to the party with this one but I thought it was time to add a little Network Storage. I purchased a DLink DSM-G600 and installed a Seagate 500GB drive (7200RPM, 16MB cache) into the unit. Once formatted, I had ~465GB of free space to use amongst my many computers in the house.

I chose this unit over the others because of several factors. One, it has an 802.11g wireless connection so if I chose not to use the integrated gigabit wireless connection I can still transfer files via the WAP. Two, it also included dual USB 2.0 external connections. This allows me to add additional drives or plug in a key that would then be able to have access to the entire net.

The installation was uneventful once I completely disregarded the instructions. I am someone who prefers to follow instructions, even though I may know what I am doing, because it always seems like you can learn something. I hit my head against the wall several times while installing this. Once I just connected it the way I thought it should be connected, all was well.

One point of interest that you will not find on the box or even in the configuration screens on the web based configuration screen (But it is a small note on the bottom of a page in the PDF Owners Manual) is that the external USB drives can not be formatted with NTFS. They must be FAT, FAT32, EXT2 or EXT3. Kind of important, don’t you think????
